What is VIN

Vehicle identification number VIN is a unique vehicle code consisting of 17 characters. The code provides information on the manufacturer and characteristics of the vehicle, and the year of manufacture. Vin code consists of 3 parts:

  • WMI (World Manufacturers Identification) - global manufacturer's index (the first three characters of the VIN);
  • VDI (Vehicle Description Section) - descriptive part (from the 4th to the 9th characters of the VIN);
  • VIS (Vehicle Identification Section) - a distinctive part (from the 10th to the 17th characters of the VIN);

WMI - is a three-character code assigned to a manufacturer for identification purposes, with the first two characters being letters indicating the geographical area and country in this area (for example, S-Z refers to Europe, and SN-ST to Germany). The third symbol indicates the manufacturer. At the same time, the manufacturer, which produces less than 500 cars per year, uses the figure 9 in the third position, and the VIN 12, 13 and 14 positions for the rest of its identification. Some manufacturers use the third character as a code for a vehicle category (for example, a car or a truck), as well as to identify a specific division of the manufacturer.

VDS - is the second block of the VIN code, consisting of six characters describing the properties of the car. The manufacturer himself determines the set of symbols used, their sequence and semantic meaning, and the unused positions are filled by him at his discretion. Manufacturers belonging to the European Union and North America put in the nine position the control number, calculated according to the algorithm adopted by the manufacturer, and protecting the car from “cutting in” the VIN.

VIS - the third block of Vin-code, consisting of eight characters, and the last four must be numbers (for the countries of North America this requirement refers to the last five characters). When the manufacturer includes the model year or assembly plant designations in the VIS, it is recommended to place them in the first and second positions of the VIS, respectively. Most manufacturers (Audi, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Opel, Peugeot, Renault, Rover, Saab, Volvo, Honda, Jaguar, Suzuki, Daihatsu, Isuzu, Hyndai, KIA, Subaru, Toyota, Nissan) adhere to these recommendations, but some of them retreat . For example, some European and Japanese manufacturers (Peugeot, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, etc.) do not indicate a model year in the VIN at all, and Ford’s European branch indicates the 10th position of the VIN, and the 11th, the month release.

What is a Toyota frame code?

Cars produced for the domestic market of Japan do not have as such a VIN in the form in which we considered it above.

Identification of cars produced by the body number (chassis number), aka frame code (frame code). The frame code, as well as the VIN, stores all the necessary information about the car: the date of issue, the color of the body and the interior, equipment and other information. But the main, most commonly used purpose of the frame code is the unambiguous identification of a car for use in parts search programs.

In contrast to the VIN, which contains 17 characters, the frame code of Japanese cars does not contain a fixed number of characters and depends on the specific manufacturer, and within the manufacturer also on the model. As well as the VIN, the Frame number is listed on your passport or certificate of registration of your car. It is also located on a special plate, which is fixed in the engine compartment of the car. It is also possible to find additional information on this car. For example, PPC models, body color, etc.
